[issue:445] *ptex --version should not require texmf.cnf
by Karl Berry 29 Aug '22

29 Aug '22

Hi - as of perhaps a month or so ago (I believe), (e)(u)ptex has started looking for texmf.cnf when given --help and --version before giving the expected output. The other engines don't look for texmf.cnf, so far as I know. It is better for those basic options to work without requiring texmf.cnf, or anything else, to be installed/findable, e.g., when running in the build directory. The result is the warning about "configuration file texmf.cnf not found". For example, cd .../Build/source/Work/texk/web2c ./ptex --version warning: kpathsea: configuration file texmf.cnf not found in these directories: [long long list omitted] .. pTeX 3.141592653-p4.0.0 (utf8.euc) (TeX Live 2023/dev) Compared with: $ ./tex --version TeX 3.141592653 (TeX Live 2023/dev) (that is, no warning is emitted) Thanks, Karl

[issue:444] packages working with (e)(u)ptex only?
by Hironobu Yamashita 31 Jul '22

31 Jul '22

(Hironobu Yamashita) e-mail: h.y.acetaminophen(a)gmail.com ---------- Forwarded message (1) --------- From: Karl Berry <karl(a)freefriends.org> Date: 2022年7月19日(火) 5:39 Subject: packages working with (e)(u)ptex only? To: <h.y.acetaminophen(a)gmail.com>, <h_kitagawa2001(a)yahoo.co.jp>, <ttk(a)t-lab.opal.ne.jp> Cc: <ctan(a)ctan.org> Hi - CTAN and I have been discussing the idea of making a new subdirectory CTAN:macros/jptex for packages that work with the "Japanese" engines only, or at least primarily. By analogy with macros/luatex, macros/xetex, etc. There would be further subdirectories latex/ and generic/ (and anything else needed) for packages that work with those formats. Our idea was that this would make it easier for people using the Japanese engines to find relevant packages. Also, just seems to make sense since all the other engines have their own subdirs for engine-specific packages. What do you think? If we go forward, a number of packages from macros/latex/contrib seem like they could be moved: bxorigcapt gentombow jsclasses pxcjkcat And maybe these from CTAN:language/japanese (leaving base and font packages there): endnotesj gckanbun jlreq jlreq-deluxe pxjahyper pxjodel Some of the above work under luatex(-ja) as well, but it felt like it would be better for users to consolidate them. Certainly could go either way. Maybe you can think of other packages that would make sense to move? Thanks, Karl ------------------------------------------ ---------- Forwarded message (2) --------- From: Hironobu Yamashita <h.y.acetaminophen(a)gmail.com> Date: 2022年7月31日(日) 11:27 Subject: Re: packages working with (e)(u)ptex only?
